BUSH ON PAKISTAN

Who: President Bush

What: An awkward encounter with the press, answering questions about the General Musharraf’s “second coup” in Pakistan.

Why you should care: Well, General Musharraf, a key ally in the war against Al Qaeda, just postponed elections, “suspended the Constitution, fired the judges of the Supreme Court, closed the transmission of privately owned television news channels and curbed the broadcasts of international broadcasters.” In the past two days, Musharraf has rounded up and arrested between 500 and 2000 opposition politicians, “lawyers, students and journalists.” Sort of throws a wrench in our goal of spreading democracy in the Middle East, eh? [NY Times]

The Audio:

With Musharraf, Bush wants it both ways, so he’s playing a game of Good Bush/Bad Bush.

Good Bush:

  • “President Musharraf has been a strong fighter against extremists and radicals. He understands the dangers posed by radicals and extremists. After all, they tried to kill him three or four times.”

  • “Our hope is that he will restore democracy as quickly as possible.”

Bad Bush:

  • “I asked the Secretary [Rice] to call him, to convey this message: we expect there to be elections as soon as possible, and that the president [Musharraf] should remove his army uniform.”

  • “Previous to this decision, we made it clear that these emergency measures would undermine democracy.”
